He began his predoctoral stage at the University of Murcia in the University Teacher Training program of the Ministry of Education and Science, where he is part of the Clinical and Health Psychology research group (E69-02), specialized in emotional problems in childhood. and in behavior modification applied to health problems. During this stage he carried out research stays at several universities in the United States: Montclair State University, City University of New York, Cornell University and Stony Brook University. In 2002, after defending his doctoral thesis with an extraordinary doctorate award, he resumed his teaching and research activity at the Miguel Hernández University (UMH). During his research career he has been the author of more than 200 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, of which 135 are included in the JCR. He has published fourteen scientific books (nine as author and five as coordinator) in publishers with international distribution. Some of them are reference manuals in universities for the training of undergraduate and graduate students, for example, Psychological Therapy, which has four reprints, or Psychological Therapy with Children and Adolescents, with three editions and four reprints.
Since its creation in 2010, he has directed the research group Analysis, Intervention and Applied Therapy with Children and Adolescents (AITANA).
He has participated as a researcher in twenty competitive projects, being the principal investigator in six of them.
He has carried out more than ten research stays in prestigious international centers, among which Cornell University in New York, the University of Southern California and Roehampton University in London stand out. As a result, he has collaborated on joint publications with international researchers. Likewise, he has carried out international teaching stays, giving undergraduate and doctoral seminars at the Universita degli Studi Generali in Florence.
He has been founding editor of the Journal of Clinical Psychology with Children and Adolescents from 2014 to 2020, and is Associate Editor of Clinic and Health (2020-present). He is part of the editorial committee of Psicothema, Psychology Notes, Behavioral Psychology, Psychologist Papers and Psychological Act. He has participated as an expert in evaluation agencies such as the State Research Agency, ANEP, Junta de Andalucía, Junta de Castilla y León, Xunta de Galicia, Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness or the Agència de Gesció d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca (AGAUR).
It has a positive evaluation by the CNEAI of three research sections (2000-2005, 2006-2011 and 2012-2017) and a research transfer section (2003-2018). He received the research award from the Orienta Foundation for child psychopathology and mental health, from the Spanish Interdisciplinary Society on AIDS for work on prevention, from the FLAPIA Foundation for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry of Argentina, and the Effective-Affective award from Janssen Laboratories. and the Rafael Burgaleta research award from the Official College of Psychology of Madrid.
He has carried out university management tasks as coordinator of the doctoral program for two years (2018-2020), coordinator of the University Clinic (2010-2020), secretary of the Faculty (2009-2020) and dean (2019-2023). Since 2020 he has been a promoter of PSICOLÓGICA, a spin off of the UMH science park dedicated to child and youth psychological treatment.
