In the article “Brief Intervention and the Theory of Planned Behavior: A randomized controlled trial among adolescents,” Gimenez and colleagues explore how Brief Intervention (BI) can impact alcohol consumption in adolescents.
The study is based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), which predicts alcohol consumption in adolescents. The idea is that modifying TPB components through BI could be beneficial. 102 Argentine high school students participated in the study, and the results conclude that after three months, the BI showed significant reductions in intention and perceived social norm, suggesting that it can influence adolescents’ beliefs and attitudes toward alcohol. Surprisingly, the readiness to change did not predict modifications in TPB components.
This study contributes to unravelling the mechanisms of change of BI and fills a gap in evidence for Latin America.
